Men and Women always use language as a tool to empower their personalities and abilities. Even in the job area is a very common thing to distinguish men and women through terminology. Some of the jobs the way they are name are usually designed for men, like: fireman, policeman, doctor etc. This language is usually used to express the type of the job, which is specifically oriented towards men kind. But now days are a lot of women, which do the same type of jobs as men. Still the language never got changed and women are still struggling to fit in the society. And is the same for women, they have specific job language, which is typically associated to them, like: secretary, nurse, hairdresser etc. The language it always divides women and men and this is just one of many example, when men and women are differentiated through the language.
It just seems so primitive that our society is still stereotyping, and using differentiating gender terms that should have been obsolete long ago. I think this is mainly an influence of men. It still is pretty much predominately a man’s world isn’t it? There has been progress though, even if it has been a slow process, to the many revisions to titles of professional positions, Fireman to Firefighter, Waitress to Food Server, and so on. It’s funny how people still stereotype Nurses and Secretaries to be women. There are a lot of men holding these positions now. I know a few male nurses and women in law enforcement, and people still look at them weird when they tell them their career.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Kiki1 and you said. I believe it is in everyone's human nature to in some way make judgement on someone else. I actually can say that for the past year or so i have learned through a very influential friend to always get to know a little about the person before judging them. I'd like to say i do not judge anyone, but i know i do. I used to worked for Les Schwab Tires, an awesome company to work, and i find myself making silly jokes about people's carelessness on their tires. People drive everyday on bad tires: separated tires, steel cords showing, baldness on one edge due from alignment issues, etc. I guess i do this because i know most people have a family and they are technically putting their family in danger if the tire(s) were to fail. To sum it all up, everyone makes judgements on others whether it is intentionally or not.
ReplyDeleteI apologize, that comment was to be on your DQ 1.
