Week #6 Discussion Question#3

After I read the chapter 3 and 4 I got fascinated by the concept of ‘’mind reading’’. We tend to mind read everybody all the time, which it is a problem in communication and make false assumptions. Usually this assumptions lead to destroying existing relations and future relations. As an example can serve me at work. A big part of my job it is to sell products to customers, sometimes I mind read the customers that seat at my desk and most of the time I am wrong about what they want and what they need. It is in the human habit to mind read, sometimes is even involuntary. This why at work my manager always gives me couching on how to avoid the mind reading and to not make false assumptions. Also another example can serve the relationship within a couple. We always mind read our partner and sometimes we end up breaking up due to the fact that thought wrong about our half. This are just some of the ugly examples that mind reading can cause, we always have to find ways to avoid it.

  1. Mind reading is a very fascinating subject. I am constantly trying to read someone’s mind, trying to figure out what they are thinking or what they might say next. However, I agree that doing so can result in false assumptions, which is never really a good thing. Trying to read someone’s mind can make things a big mess, which is why I do it for more of a game, rather than making my assumptions. I try to see if I can guess what will be said next, half the time I’m wrong. Mind reading would be fun to actually be able to do effectively, but also scary at the same time.

  2. I like this concept. Makes us a better person after we realize that mind reading isn't always the best idea. Sometimes people dont notice what their body language is telling and "we" as readers, may base our "mind reading" on that. The person could just be tired and not realize that their body language is appearing negatively, but the reader already has a "statement" of the mind reading thinking the person is unhappy, negative and etc. Like SuzieQ said reading someones mind could be a big mess. I agree with that. Many time I rushed into reading someones mind and was wrong. That ended up creating a big problem out of nothing. We tend to assume and read minds and it is a bad habit.
