I do agree with the concept ‘’creatures of our culture’’, because people tempt to modulate their behaviors by the ambience where they live into. I am coming from a very traditional culture and my personality still even after moving five years ago to United States didn’t change. We are the creature that are born in a certain culture and is really heard to change behaviors, beliefs and values after growing up in a certain ambience. Culture has a huge impact on our development and I consider Ruth Benedicts’ theory to be pretty accurate. We a born in a certain way and we are raised in a certain, and I can state that after nineteen years being a part of a different culture it is hard to give up all that I was taught to be truth to change it otherwise. I learned to live in a different culture, to have the same beliefs as that culture.
Your post was very interesting to read. I think I have actually heard both sides of your topic before. I've heard people that have said the same thing, the culturally learned behaviors have been so instilled into them that they have never left. Conversely, I also heard of people that have completely changed, remember how they grew up, but encountered new experiences which led to new beliefs or habits. I'm sure there are many factors playing into each situation though. Nevertheless, I think overall we are creatures of our environment. Another question that could be proposed is, which environment and at what time has had the most impact and why?
ReplyDeleteI agree with your post. However, I believe that our culture is a portion of who we are. Other aspects of life shape us. I think that each person is different and so it really depends the individual. But I do agree with culture having a huge impact on our development. I also was born in one culture and was raised in a different culture. I carry many traditions from both cultures with me and I share them to those unfamiliar with them.
