Week#7 Disscusion Question# 3

After I read the Chapter I really liked the study of the Kinesics ( aka Body Language). I never thought that body language can be so diverse. I think the body language is important in any aspect of our life.  We make different body movements each day, voluntary or involuntary, but we do. A lot of times our body says whatever we have on our mind.
Kinesics - body movements are an important part of public speaking. Kinesics is the study of body movements and gestures as a form of nonverbal communication. There are several types. Ekman and Freisen divided kinesics - body movements into 5 categories:
  1. Emblems are nonverbal signals that can generally be translated directly into words. Most people within a culture or group agree on their meaning.
  2. Illustrators are movements that complement verbal communication by describing or accenting or reinforcing what the speaker is saying.
  3. Affect Displays are nonverbal displays of the body or face that carry an emotional meaning or display affective states.
  4. Regulators are nonverbal messages that accompany speech to control or regulate what the speaker is saying.
  5. Adaptors are forms of nonverbal communication that often occur at a low level of personal awareness.

  1. I agree with you, body language it is very important in every aspect of our life’s, since we are humans and our nature is to communicate. We are constantly communicating since we were born. The study of body movements is interesting. Communication is really complex and our cultures influence a lot. I like how kinesics body movements are divided they are explained pretty simple in all the ways communication can be. I think each human being have the responsibility to be aware of what the other is trying to transmit forgetting our biases. We should know how to use communication otherwise people will not understand us.
